I value writing advice. I love hearing how people grew as writers, what their process is or how it has evolved, and especially, how they plow through rough patches on the journey. But…there is a limit to following other paths. You can learn from fellow travelers, but ultimately, each journey is unique and you have to find your own way of “getting it done.”
This video clip of Karen Cushman (Newbery Medal and Honor winner) speaking at an SCBWI conference hilariously outlines this point. Makes me chuckle every time…
PS I also love that she started writing novels as she neared 50yrs of age. Another lesson on not allowing other journeys to limit your own.
